Vulcan B2 XM599 of No 50 Squadron at Barksdale AFB, Louisiana for Giant Voice 1978. The RAF Vulcans detached to Barksdale had had their tail squadron badges replaced with the 1 Group panther badge and a union jack and this aircraft was flown by a 44(R) crew. The badge on the rear of the H2S radome is that of Strategic Air Command. Giant Voice was a SAC bombing/navigation competition. Marks were also awarded for in-flight refuelling (the system had been rendered inoperative on the Vulcans till the Falklands) so the best prize the Vulcan could achieve was the Mathis Trophy for best overall bombing and navigation. 599 was delivered to No 35 Squadron in 1963 and subsequently pooled into the Coningsby Wing which became the Cottesmore Wing in 1964. 599 was transferred to the Waddington Wing in 1968. Allocated to 50 Squadron in 1975, 599 was transferred to 44 (Rhodesia) Squadron in 1979 and was retired to St Athan in 1981 and scrapped the following year.
