Unpainted Avro Vulcan B1 XA890 with a dummy Yellow Sun Mk2 at Farnborough during a loading trial in 1962. Some authorities state that 890 was the only production B1 not to be built or retrofitted with a phase 2 wing. Yet in this photograph, the outer wing has a sharp leading edge which overhangs and there are vortex generators on the upper outer surfaces that positively identify a phase 2 wing. The provenance of the image is extremely good and there are other photographs in existance of 890 with what is obviously a phase 2 wing. Note how the carrier (similar to Blue Danube's) fitted high into the bomb arch. The second production B1, 890 was delivered in 1955 and appeared at the Farnborough Air Show of that year with an original straight wing. It spent its entire life being used for trials - radio, radar, blind-landing and armaments. It was withdrawn and scrapped at Bedford in 1971.
