Avro Vulcan B2 XL426 of No 617 Squadron at Nellis AFB in December 1978 for Exercise Red Flag. 426 was delivered as a B2 Blue Steel to No 83 Squadron in September 1962 and soon after was absorbed by the Scampton Wing. Between October and December 1969, 426 was converted to free-fall and retained by the Scampton Wing (by now Nos 27 and 617 Squadrons). 426 was issued to 617 Squadron in April 1972, remaining there until January 1982 though it was loaned to other Scampton units on brief occasions. Transferred to No 50 Squadron at Waddington, 426 served until April 1984 when it was selected as the prime display Vulcan. In 1986, 426 was replaced by XH558 and was sold to the Vulcan Restoration Trust at Southend.
