Vulcan B2 XH558 at Waddington in 1992 shortly before being retired to Bruntingthorpe. The photograph demonstrates how difficult it would have been for the rear crew to abandon the aircraft should the nosewheel have been down. The aircraft did not fly with the ladder in place so the normal method of abandonment was to use the door as a slide. With the nosewheel lowered, the crew member was expected to grasp and hang on to one of the door opening jacks and allow the slipstream to straighten him out slightly to the side of the nosewheel. Apparently this had been tested using B1 XA892 and a blower tunnel in 1959.
