Avro Vulcan B2s of No 617 Squadron on a dispersal exercise to RAF Leeming in October 1979. Four aircraft (XL392, XM574, XL446 & XL426) are parked on the Strike Force Dispersal (A) whilst a fifth (XJ783), out of picture to the left, is parked on the turning loop (B). Dispersal airfields were proposed in 1959 and in February 1962, a list of the 36 approved for Operational Readyness Platforms (ORPs) was circulated and Leeming was listed as a dispersal airfield with facilities for two aircraft. In common with some other airfields that are listed with facilities for two aircraft, Leeming was clearly completed with hardstandings for four. Notice how the bomber ORP has since been modified with three hardened aircraft shelters (HASs).
