Avro Vulcan B2s XL446 and XL426 of No 617 Squadron on a dispersal exercise to RAF Leeming in October 1979. Both 446 and 426 were delivered originally as B2 Blue Steels. However, during the retrofit programme of the mid 60s, 426 was fitted with 'A and E' saddle bomb-bay fuel tanks and returned to the Blue Steel wing at Scampton whereas 446 was converted to free-fall and continued service with the Waddington Wing in 1966 and 230 OCU the following year. Since it was not modified for A & E bomb-bay tanks, 446 received the modifications to carry two 8000lb cylindrical bomb-bay tanks. 446 was delivered to the Akrotiri Wing in 1972 returning to Scampton with No 35 Squadron in 1975 and transferred to No 617 Squadron in 1978.
