Avro Vulcan B2 XL388 at McClellan AFB, Sacramento, Califormia in 1979. 388 was delivered to IX Squadron at RAF Coningsby in June 1962. In 1963, 388 was given the name 'Mayflower III' for a visit to Boston, Mass, USA carrying greetings from Boston, Lincs. In 1964, 388 was reengined with Olympus 301 engines and modified to B2 Blue Steel standard, reentering service with the Scampton Wing in February 1965. After conversion back to the free fall role in 1970, 388 served at both Scampton and Waddington, being allocated to No 44 (Rhodesia) Squadron in 1975.
