Avro Vulcan B2 Blue Steel XL317 of No 617 Squadron with a Blue Steel missile in 1963. Stockpiled Blue Steel missiles (W105) were white. The missile above was painted blue. At least one one training round (W103A) was painted blue but the missile above is identified as a W100A (a pre-production missile without a warhead that closely resembled the W105) used for both flight trials and familiarisation by the RAF. 'Dickie' Bird advises:

'The photo of XL317 shows a 100A and it is obviously other than white. A few rounds were test fired at various ranges and may have been painted to aid visibility. I seem to recall that the test rounds came directly from Woodford [to Scampton] but I am not too sure.'
